Theories of Comedy Relativity

’Bred Alerts, 03.21.06 - 04.09.06

There’s a theme this time out. See if you can pick up on it. Hey, maybe the title’s a clue. (All times Pacific; actually recommended things highlighted like this*.)

TV

Mind of Mencia (Wed. 03.22, 10:30 p.m., Comedy Central; season premiere) Do you like comedy? Or will some guy yelling his opinions be sufficient? (Your reading this blog indicates the latter.)

The Loop (Thu. 03.23, 8:30 p.m., Fox) Maybe never before has a documentary-style, no-laugh-track sitcom needed a laugh track more, or been able to justify a documentary style less. Then again, it’s scheduled opposite Four Kings, which should make anything seem entertaining by comparison.

Doctor Who* (Fri. 03.24, 9 p.m., SciFi) Kind of fun, and no prior geekiness required.

Everwood (Mon. 03.27, 8 p.m., WB) It’s back from hiatus. But don’t get too attached.

Robert Ludlum’s Covert One: The Hades Factor (Sun. 04.09, 9 p.m., CBS, first of two parts) In this new miniseries, America confronts the threat of a long, ridiculous miniseries title.

Movies

Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector (opens Fri. 03.24) The relative hilarity of Mencia just nudged upward.

The Benchwarmers (Fri. 04.27) Starring Rob Schneider and David Spade, produced by Adam Sandler. I think we can all do the comedy math on that one. (Just remember that anything multiplied by zero is zero.)

DVD

King Kong (available Tue. 03.28) You know how you didn’t go see this in the theaters because it’s (somehow) three hours long? Now we can watch it at home and spread that three hours over a week.

Books

Christopher Moore, A Dirty Job* (available Tue. 03.21) When it comes to funny (and twisted) Moore is 8-for-8. Here comes No. 9, and it’s all about death.

Music

Prince, 3121 (available Tue. 03.21) I guess 1999’s not good enough for him anymore.

The Flaming Lips, At War with the Mystics (Tue. 04.04) Supposedly more rockin’ than their last two albums. But … but … we liked their last two albums.

Bubba Sparxxx, The Charm (Tue. 04.04) Redneck rap: now that’s a funny idea. Oh wait, it’s not supposed to be.
